A Class C is two vehicles joined in the middle. The front is a factory van cab, built by Ford or Chevrolet or Mercedes to automotive standards. The rear is a coach body built by an RV manufacturer to entirely different ones. They meet at a transition, and much of what makes a Class C distinctive happens at that join.

The over-cab bunk

The bunk over the cab is what makes a Class C recognisable and it is the most common site of water damage on one.

The reason is geometry. The bunk is a moulded structure joined to the cab below, to the coach body behind, and to the roof above. That is four sealed transitions on a projecting structure that catches sun on all its surfaces and takes direct rain and road spray on its front face.

Every one of those seals ages, and the ones on the front face age fastest. Water that gets in soaks the bunk floor, then travels back into the coach body along the roof transition, and by the time an owner sees a stain the substrate has usually failed across a large area.

On any Class C with a water complaint, the bunk is the first place we look, and on any Class C we see for another reason, we check it anyway.

The cab-to-body transition

Damage that crosses the join is the other Class C characteristic.

It requires automotive repair method on the cab side, coach method on the body side, and careful work where they meet, because the two structures are built differently, flex differently and are attached rather than continuous.

A shop competent at one side and not the other will do half the job well. That is a large part of why Class C work ends up here.

Super C

Same coach body philosophy on a medium duty truck chassis, typically Freightliner or International, rather than a cutaway van.

Much heavier, much higher capacity, considerably better for towing, and on the chassis side it behaves like a commercial truck. A frame rack rated for the weight is required for structural work, which is not the case on a standard Class C.

Systems and roof

The house side is a smaller version of a Class A: electrical, plumbing, appliances, air conditioning, frequently a generator, and one or two slide rooms.

The roof has the same penetration problem as any coach and one additional consideration: on a Class C the roof transitions onto the bunk, and that transition is a seam that moves as the two structures flex relative to each other. It needs inspecting specifically rather than as part of a general roof check.

Checking your own coach

The two things worth inspecting on a Class C, twice a year and after any storm.

The bunk, specifically. Not the roof generally, the bunk. Look at the seal along the front face, both side transitions, and where the bunk meets the roof. Press the bunk floor from inside. Look at the ceiling of the cab below it for staining, which is where water that got into the bunk ends up.

The cab-to-body transition. From outside, look along the join for cracked sealant or a gap. From inside, look at the ceiling and upper walls where the coach body begins. This joint moves as the two structures flex against each other, and it works its sealant harder than any other seam on the vehicle.

Both take five minutes and both catch the failures that turn into five-figure repairs.

Getting a Class C here from Cypress

We are at 23281 La Palma Ave in Yorba Linda, about 25 minutes from Cypress on the 91. A Class C is straightforward to bring in and easy to park, and unlike a Class A it does not need a specialist tow if it is undrivable, though a flatbed rated for the weight is still the right answer rather than a standard hook.

Bring your registration, your claim number if you are filing, and receipts for any aftermarket work. If you already know about a leak or a system that is not working, mention it even if it is unrelated to why you are coming in, because addressing it while the coach is here costs considerably less than a second visit.

Why is my over-cab bunk leaking?
