Lift Gate Installation and Repair
In short: A lift gate applies a large repeated cantilever load to the rear of a chassis, which is why the mounting structure fails more often than the gate does and why a gate that sags is usually reporting a frame problem.

A lift gate is a piece of lifting equipment permanently attached to a vehicle. That framing is worth holding onto, because it explains both how they fail and why the failures matter.
Lifting equipment operates near its rated capacity routinely, cycles thousands of times, and puts people directly underneath a suspended load. When one fails it is a downtime event and an injury risk in the same moment.
The load nobody accounts for
A lift gate hangs off the rear of the chassis, behind the rear axle, and applies a large cantilever moment to the frame every time it lifts. Multiply that by several thousand cycles a year and the mounting structure is doing more work than the gate itself.
Which is why the failures we see most often are structural rather than mechanical: cracked mounting brackets, deformed frame rails behind the gate, elongated fastener holes, and a gate that has started sitting crooked or sagging when stowed.
A gate that used to be square and is not any more is reporting a structural problem, and adjusting it to look right is treating a symptom. That is where this crosses into frame straightening and welding.
Systems we work on
Maxon, Tommy Gate, Anthony and Waltco across the common configurations: tuck-under, rail gate, cantilever, column and side loaders, in hydraulic and electro-hydraulic forms, on box trucks, flatbeds, stake beds, service bodies and delivery vans.
Diagnosis, because the symptoms overlap
A gate that lifts slowly, or will not lift a full load, has two entirely different possible causes that look identical from the operator position.
Hydraulic. Low fluid, a worn pump, internal cylinder leakage, a failing valve.
Electrical. A lift gate draws very high current. A tired battery, a corroded cable, a poor ground or an undersized connection all produce voltage sag under load, which produces a pump that turns slowly, which produces a gate that lifts slowly.
We test both rather than assuming, because replacing a pump that was starved of current fixes nothing. Diagnostics are $285 for the first hour and credited back.
What we do
Hydraulic repair including pumps, cylinders, valves and hoses, electrical and control repair including motors, solenoids, switches and the high current supply, structural mounting repair and reinforcement, platform and hinge repair, seal replacement, scheduled service, full installation on trucks that never had a gate, and removal and refitting when a body is replaced.
Installation
Fitting a gate to a truck that never had one is a fabrication project rather than a bolt-on.
Frame capacity has to be verified against the intended load. Mounting structure is fabricated and welded to spread the cantilever load into the frame properly rather than concentrating it. Hydraulics are plumbed with correct routing and protection. High current electrical is run with appropriate cable sizing, fusing and isolation, because a lift gate circuit that fails short is a fire. Controls are integrated and interlocks verified.
Then it is load tested before it goes back to work.

Service intervals
Every six months on a gate in daily service. Annually on lighter use.
A service covers hydraulic fluid condition and leaks, hose condition particularly where hoses flex or chafe, cylinder and pin wear, electrical connections and battery condition, structural inspection of the mounting and surrounding frame, and function testing at rated load.
It is inexpensive against the cost of a failure. A gate that drops a load is an injury claim, and a gate that fails mid-route is a truck stranded with cargo it cannot unload.
Estimates are $150 and credited back against an authorized repair.
Operator damage and how to reduce it
A meaningful share of lift gate repair is not wear, it is use outside the design envelope, and most of it is preventable with training rather than engineering.
The recurring patterns: loading beyond rated capacity because the gate did not obviously object; loading off centre, which twists the platform and wears hinges unevenly; using the platform as a step or a work surface, which loads it in ways the design did not anticipate; driving with the gate improperly stowed, which is where most platform and hinge damage originates; and operating with a marginal battery, which slowly destroys the pump motor through repeated low voltage starts.
For fleet accounts we will provide a short operator briefing alongside the repair, because a gate that gets repaired for the same cause three times is a training problem rather than a mechanical one. It costs nothing and it reduces the recurrence more reliably than any component upgrade.
