Awning Repair and Replacement
In short: Most awning failures are wind failures, and most wind failures happen to awnings that were left out unattended, which is why the repair conversation usually starts with a bent arm rather than worn fabric.

Awnings fail in a predictable order, and knowing that order tells you what you are actually dealing with when yours stops working.
Fabric wears out on a schedule. Arms bend in an event. Motors and sensors fail electrically. The three need different responses, and the most expensive mistake is treating a wind-damaged arm as a fabric problem, replacing the fabric, and having the arm let go three months later.
Fabric
Awning fabric in Southern California has a service life of roughly five to eight years. UV degrades the coating, then the substrate, then the stitching. The characteristic failure is a tear that starts at a stitched seam or at the roller channel and runs.
Fabric-only replacement is straightforward and it is the right answer when the roller, spring and arms are sound. It is a false economy when they are not. New fabric on a roller with worn bearings or a tired spring will not tension properly, which means it flaps in wind, and flapping fabric abrades itself and destroys a new awning in a season.
We check roller bearings and spring tension before quoting fabric only, and we will tell you when the honest answer is a fuller job.
Arms and mechanism
Most awning failures we see are wind failures, and nearly all wind failures happen to awnings left extended unattended.
An awning is a large sail attached to the side of a vehicle by two aluminium arms. Modest wind produces surprisingly large loads. The arms bend, the mounting rail deforms, and in bad cases the whole assembly comes down against the sidewall and takes bodywork with it, at which point it is a panel repair as well as an awning job.
Bent aluminium arms can sometimes be straightened. We are cautious about it, because aluminium work-hardens and a straightened arm is weaker than it was. On a load-bearing arm we generally recommend replacement, since the failure mode of an arm letting go is expensive and potentially dangerous.
Mounting rail damage is worth checking whenever an arm has failed. The rail is bonded or bolted to the sidewall and a hard wind event frequently deforms or partially releases it, which then leaks.
Motors, sensors and electrics
Powered awnings from Carefree, Dometic and Solera use a motor plus some combination of wind sensors, position sensors and limit switches.
The characteristic complaint is an awning that stops partway or refuses to extend. That is far more often a sensor or a switch than a motor, and it is also frequently low voltage: a motor fed through a corroded connection or a tired battery stalls under load and presents exactly like a mechanical fault.
Which is why diagnosis comes before parts here. Replacing a motor that was never faulty is a common and avoidable expense. Our electrical system repair covers the supply side when that turns out to be the cause.

Beyond coaches
Awnings on food trucks, mobile clinics, mobile retail and event vehicles are working equipment rather than comfort features, and they get used far harder than a coach awning. They are also frequently retrofitted, which means there is no factory rail and one has to be fabricated and mounted to carry the load properly rather than screwed into a skin.
We do that as a fabrication job with the awning fitted afterwards, because the mounting is the part that determines whether it survives.

Making one last
Retract it when you leave and retract it overnight. That single habit prevents most awning damage.
Never leave it out in wind. Wind sensors on powered awnings help and they are not a substitute for judgement, since a sensor reacts after the gust has already arrived.
Let it dry before retracting where you can. Rolling up wet fabric and leaving it for weeks grows mildew that stains permanently and weakens the coating.
Clean twice a year with mild soap, and check the arm pivots and the mounting rail while you are there.
