Headlight Restoration

Headlight restoration reads as a cosmetic service and is really a visibility one. A heavily hazed lens can cut usable output by more than half, and on a vehicle that is 40 feet long and needs a long distance to stop, seeing further genuinely matters.
Why lenses fail
Modern headlight lenses are polycarbonate rather than glass, which is lighter, tougher and cheaper to form into complex shapes. Polycarbonate degrades under UV, so from the factory it carries a hard coat that blocks it.
That coat has a service life. Once it degrades, UV reaches the polycarbonate underneath and oxidises it, which is the yellow haze.
Southern California accelerates this considerably. So does lens geometry: a steeply raked or horizontal lens takes far more direct sun than an upright one and fails years earlier.
Why cheap restoration fails
The reason many people believe headlight restoration does not last is that they have had the cheap version.
Sanding and polishing removes the oxidised layer. It also removes whatever remained of the factory hard coat. The result is a clear lens made of bare, unprotected polycarbonate sitting in direct sun, which hazes again within months, frequently faster than it did originally.
A proper restoration finishes by applying a new UV protective coating. That is the step that determines whether the result lasts two to four years or one season, and it is the step that gets skipped when a service is priced at a level that cannot include it.
How we do it
Masking of surrounding paint and trim, because the abrasives involved will damage it. Wet sanding in progressive grits to remove all the oxidised material. Polishing to optical clarity. Thorough cleaning and preparation of the surface. Then a UV protective clear coat applied and cured.
When restoration is not the answer
Restoration works on the outer surface. It cannot address:
A cracked lens, which will admit moisture regardless of surface condition.
Moisture inside the housing, which fogs from the inside and indicates a failed seal. That is a housing repair or replacement.
Failed reflector coating, where the reflective surface behind the lens has degraded. The lens can be made perfectly clear and the output will still be poor.
Failed lens bonding, where the lens is separating from the housing.
We inspect for all of those first and will tell you when restoration cannot deliver rather than performing it anyway.

Fleet value
This is one of the better value fleet services available.
It improves night visibility across every vehicle in the fleet, which is a genuine safety improvement for drivers working early and late. It is inexpensive per unit. It noticeably improves how the fleet looks, which matters on branded vehicles. And a hazed headlight producing inadequate output is a finding at inspection.
We schedule fleet work in batches so units are off the road minimally, and most vehicles are done within a few hours.
Making it last
Wash the lenses when you wash the vehicle, and dry them rather than leaving water to spot.
Do not use abrasive cleaners or compounds on a coated lens, because the coating is the protection and removing it restarts the whole process.
Park in shade or cover the vehicle where you can, which is the same advice that applies to every other exterior surface and for the same reason.

Output, and what actually improves it
Restoration recovers the light your existing units can produce. It does not add any.
On older coaches and commercial trucks, restoration frequently reveals that the underlying units were never good, because sealed beam and early halogen systems on a large vehicle were marginal when new and are worse now with degraded reflectors and thirty years of voltage drop in the harness.
Where that is the case there are two upgrades worth considering. A relay harness taking power directly from the battery through a relay, rather than through decades of switch and connector resistance, frequently recovers a meaningful fraction of output for very little money and is the first thing to try. Beyond that, LED replacement units where a compliant unit exists for the fitment.
We are cautious about the second one. Dropping an LED bulb into a housing designed around a halogen filament produces a beam pattern that is bright in the wrong places and dark where it matters, and it dazzles oncoming traffic while lighting the road worse than the original. Where an upgrade is worth doing it is a complete compliant unit rather than a bulb swap, and we will say when a fitment has no good option.
