ADAS Scan and Recalibration
In short: A driver assistance camera aimed a fraction of a degree off will still operate and will act on incorrect information, which is why recalibration after a windshield or body repair is a safety requirement rather than a service upsell.

Advanced driver assistance systems are aimed. That is the whole thing worth understanding about them.
A forward collision camera measures distance and closing speed based on where objects appear in its field of view relative to a known reference. Radar measures against a known mounting angle. Lane keeping measures lane position against an expected geometry.
Move any of that by a fraction of a degree and the system keeps working. It just works from a wrong reference, and it acts on the results.
Why this is a safety item rather than a service item
A system that has stopped working is obvious. The driver sees a warning light and stops relying on it.
A system that is miscalibrated shows no warning. It operates normally most of the time, because most of the time nothing requires it to act. Then in the moment where it matters it brakes for something that is not there, fails to see something that is, or steers toward a lane edge it has misjudged.
The driver has meanwhile spent months learning to trust it. That combination is worse than not having the system at all, which is why manufacturers specify recalibration as a required operation rather than a recommendation.
When it is required
- After windshield replacement on any vehicle with a camera mounted to or behind the glass. See RV windshield replacement.
- After bumper or grille repair or replacement where radar or ultrasonic sensors are mounted. See bumper repair.
- After suspension work, lift kits or anything changing ride height or thrust angle.
- After collision repair affecting any sensor mounting point or the structure around it.
- After alignment work on vehicles where the systems reference thrust angle.
- Any time a related fault code is present.
Manufacturers publish the trigger conditions for each vehicle and we follow those rather than judging by eye, because the tolerances involved are not visible.
Static and dynamic
Static calibration happens in the shop against targets placed at precisely measured distances and heights from the vehicle, on level floor, with the vehicle at specified ride height and tyre pressures. Floor flatness and target placement accuracy both matter, which is why this is not a driveway procedure.
Dynamic calibration requires driving the vehicle under specified conditions, at specified speeds, on roads with clear lane markings, while the system learns.
Many vehicles require both, in sequence.
What we work on
Sprinter, Transit and ProMaster vans and everything built on them, which includes a large share of Class B and Class C motorhomes that inherit the donor chassis systems. Modern Class A coaches on chassis with collision mitigation and lane departure. Commercial trucks, which have had these systems for years. Rivian R1T and R1S. Fleet vehicles across the range.
Coach owners are frequently unaware their vehicle has these systems, because the coach builder's documentation covers the house side and the chassis manufacturer's systems are described elsewhere. We scan and identify rather than asking the customer.

Documentation
Every calibration produces a report: systems identified, pre-repair scan results, procedures performed, post-repair scan results, and confirmation of completion.
That document matters in three places. Your insurer frequently requires it before paying for the operation. It forms part of the repair record if the vehicle is ever sold. And it is the evidence that the operation was performed correctly if a subsequent incident raises the question.
We provide it as standard rather than on request.

Why calibration cannot be done in a driveway
Static calibration has physical requirements that are easy to state and difficult to improvise.
The floor has to be genuinely level across the whole working area, because the target height is measured relative to the vehicle and a slope introduces an angular error directly into the calibration. Targets have to be positioned at manufacturer-specified distances and heights, measured rather than estimated. The vehicle has to be at specified ride height with correct tyre pressures and no unusual load, because a vehicle sitting low on one corner is aimed differently.
Lighting matters too on camera-based systems, as does having enough clear space around the vehicle that nothing reflective or patterned confuses the target recognition.
Meeting all of that requires a dedicated bay rather than a corner of a workshop, which is why mobile ADAS calibration is a service you should be cautious about accepting. A calibration performed outside the specified conditions produces a system that reports as calibrated and is not, which is the worst of the available outcomes because nobody will look at it again.
