Leveling System Repair
In short: A leveling system that will not retract is a vehicle that cannot move, which is why the manual override procedure is worth knowing before you need it rather than after.

Leveling systems are simple until they fail, at which point they can immobilise the vehicle entirely. That asymmetry is worth respecting, because a coach with a jack stuck down is not a coach with an inconvenience, it is a coach that cannot leave.
Systems
Hydraulic. Lippert, HWH, Power Gear and BigFoot. A pump, a reservoir, valves and cylinders. Powerful, smooth, and capable of very large forces. Failures are leaks, valve faults, pump faults and control problems.
Electric. Screw jacks driven by motors. Simpler, no fluid, generally less powerful. Failures are motors, drive nuts, gearboxes and controllers.
Manual. Scissor and stabiliser jacks on lighter trailers, which stabilise rather than level and should not be used to lift.
Automatic leveling. Any of the above with sensors and a controller that levels at the press of a button. The added complexity is the sensor and control side, which is where a large share of faults sit.
Why level matters more than comfort
Level affects several things beyond whether a glass slides off the counter.
Absorption refrigerators depend on gravity to circulate their working fluid. Running one significantly off level damages the cooling unit, and that damage is not repairable. See appliance repair.
Slide-out rooms are designed to travel through a square opening. A coach sitting twisted racks the opening and the room binds, which can damage the mechanism. See slide-out repair.
Doors and drawers stop latching, and the frame itself carries load it was not designed for over a long stay.
What fails
Hydraulic leaks. At cylinder seals, at fittings, and in lines that have chafed against structure. A jack that drifts down overnight is leaking internally past a seal or a valve.
Pump failures. Motors, and more often the solenoid that switches them.
Valve faults. Solenoid valves that stick, which produces the classic symptom of one jack that will not move while the others work.
Control boards and sensors. On auto-leveling systems, a level sensor reading incorrectly will produce a coach that insists it is level while visibly sitting on a slope.
Motor and drive nut wear on electric systems.
Frame mount damage. From jacks extended onto soft ground, or from a coach lowered onto a jack that was already at full extension.
Corrosion on jack rams, which then destroys seals when retracted.

Manual override, before you need it
Find your manual override procedure now and read it while the coach is working. Every system has one, and every owner manual documents it.
On hydraulic systems it is usually a release valve at the pump that lets the jacks drop or be pushed up. On electric systems there is typically a drive nut accessible with a socket or a drill.
What you should not do is improvise. Forcing a pressurised hydraulic system can injure you seriously, and a jack that releases suddenly under a coach with someone underneath it is a fatal scenario. If the documented procedure does not work, call rather than experimenting.
Blocks, and why they matter
Use blocks under the jacks on anything except firm level concrete.
A jack foot on hot asphalt sinks. A jack foot on soft ground under a 15,000 kilogram coach sinks further. The consequences are a coach that settles unevenly overnight, a jack loaded sideways as it sinks, and in bad cases a bent ram or a distorted frame mount.
Blocks spread the load and keep jack extension shorter, which is mechanically better in every respect. They cost very little relative to a frame mount repair.

Long term parking
A coach that sits on its jacks for months has a different set of problems from one that levels and moves every few weeks.
Rams left extended collect road film, dust and moisture on the exposed chrome, which then gets dragged past the seals when the jack finally retracts. That is the most common cause of seal failure on an otherwise healthy hydraulic system.
The mitigation is straightforward. Wipe the exposed rams before retracting after any long stay. Keep a light film of appropriate lubricant on them if the coach is stored extended. And cycle the system fully every month or two even when the coach is not going anywhere, because a system that moves stays sealed and a system that sits does not.
On electric systems the equivalent problem is corrosion on the drive screw and in the gearbox, and the mitigation is the same: cycle it periodically rather than leaving it in one position through a season.
