A Class B is the smallest RV classification and mechanically the most complicated to repair properly, because it combines a modern unibody vehicle with a fitted interior that has to come out before the vehicle underneath can be worked on.

Unibody first

Sprinter, Transit, ProMaster and Metris are unibody. There is no separate frame. The floor pan, rockers, pillars and roof rails are the structure, engineered to route crash energy along designed paths.

That means a crushed rocker is structural rather than cosmetic, repair follows published manufacturer procedure covering where sectioning is permitted and which high-strength components must be replaced rather than straightened, and tolerances are tighter than on a body-on-frame vehicle.

The build comes out

This is the part that surprises owners and that adjusters routinely miss.

Structural repair needs access to the inside of the shell. On an empty cargo van that is trivial. On a Class B it means removing cabinetry, wall and ceiling panels, insulation, wiring looms, plumbing runs, water tanks, the solar controller, the inverter, the battery bank and frequently the heater.

All of it has to come out carefully, be stored, and go back correctly. That is real labor and it is the single most common line missing from a carrier's first estimate.

We photograph the build at teardown and submit it as a documented supplement, which works considerably better when the owner can also produce the build invoice.

Systems

Class B systems are compact versions of what a larger coach carries and frequently more sophisticated, because van conversions attract owners who care about off-grid capability.

Solar and lithium systems are common and frequently substantial. 12 volt electrical with an inverter and often a DC to DC charger. Compact plumbing. Diesel or propane auxiliary heating. A compressor refrigerator rather than an absorption unit, because a van moves and parks off level constantly.

We repair and build all of it, which is the reason to bring a Class B here rather than to an automotive shop that will hand the interior back to you.

Recalibration

Class B coaches inherit the donor chassis driver assistance systems. Forward collision cameras, radar, lane keeping, blind spot monitoring.

Any repair affecting a sensor mounting, the windshield, the bumper or the ride height requires ADAS recalibration. It is not optional, and a system running from an incorrect reference is worse than no system.

Many Class B owners do not know their coach has these systems, because the coach builder's documentation covers the house side and the chassis manufacturer's covers the rest. We scan and identify rather than asking.

Documenting your build before you need to

The single best thing a Class B owner can do costs nothing and takes an afternoon.

Photograph the interior comprehensively while it is intact. Every cabinet, the electrical panel, the battery bank, the solar controller, the inverter, the water system, the heater. Photograph the labels and model numbers on everything.

Then put those photographs somewhere that is not in the van, along with the build invoice if you had it professionally converted and receipts for anything you added afterwards.

The reason is that the most common uncovered loss on a converted van is the conversion itself, settled at base vehicle specification because nobody could establish what was in it. On a well-equipped build that is frequently a large fraction of the vehicle's value.

Getting a Class B here from Cypress

Empty personal belongings before you come, because on a conversion we frequently need access to spaces that are full of your possessions, and we would rather not be responsible for them. Where Class B repairs go wrong elsewhere

Two failure patterns show up on Class B coaches that have been repaired somewhere else.

The first is an automotive body shop that repaired the shell correctly and put the interior back approximately. Cabinets refitted into their old holes rather than into structure, wiring reconnected with the shortest available splice, insulation left out of the cavity it came from because refitting it properly is slow. The van drives fine and the conversion starts failing six months later.

The second is an RV service centre that rebuilt the interior beautifully on a shell that was never brought back to specification. On a unibody there is no separate frame to hide behind: if the structure is out, the doors will not seal and the vehicle will not fold correctly in the next impact, regardless of how good the cabinetry is.

Both halves have to be right, which is the argument for a shop that does both rather than one that subcontracts the half it does not do.

Is a Class B the same as a camper van?
Effectively yes. Class B is the RV industry classification for a coach built inside a factory van body rather than on a stripped chassis. Whether it came from Winnebago, Roadtrek, Airstream or a custom builder, the repair considerations are the same: a unibody van shell with a conversion inside it.
Why does repairing a Class B cost more than repairing an empty van?
Because structural repair on a unibody requires access to the inside of the shell, which means removing the conversion. Cabinetry, insulation, wall panels, wiring, plumbing, water tanks, solar controllers and battery banks all come out, get stored, and go back. On a well-built conversion that labor can approach the cost of the structural work itself.
Can you repair the conversion as well as the van?
Yes, and that is the point of bringing it here rather than to an automotive body shop. Body and structure, then cabinetry, electrical, solar, plumbing and heating all under one roof. A shop that repairs the shell and hands the interior back to you unfinished has done half a job.
Do Class B vans need ADAS recalibration after repair?
Frequently yes, because they inherit the donor chassis driver assistance systems. A Sprinter or Transit based Class B has the same forward cameras, radar and lane keeping as the commercial version, and any repair affecting a sensor mounting or the windshield requires recalibration. Many Class B owners are unaware their coach has these systems at all.
